NMDC eyes 60 MT iron ore output, enters thermal coal sector
State-owned NMDC is pursuing aggressive expansion plans, targeting 60 million tonnes of iron ore production by FY27 while diversifying into thermal coal, critical minerals and rare earth elements to strengthen its market position.

India's National Mineral Development Corporation is charting an ambitious growth trajectory centred on volume expansion and portfolio diversification. The state-run miner aims to ramp up iron ore production to 60 million tonnes by fiscal year 2027, building on its existing operations and recent capacity enhancements.
Beyond iron ore, NMDC is positioning itself to enter the thermal coal sector, with plans to commence commercial production in the near term. This strategic shift reflects the corporation's effort to capitalise on growing domestic demand for energy resources and reduce reliance on a single commodity.
The diversification strategy extends further into critical minerals and rare earth elements, areas where India has sought to reduce import dependence. These segments are increasingly vital for electronics manufacturing, renewable energy infrastructure and defence applications, aligning NMDC's expansion with broader national priorities.
The production ramp-up and sectoral diversification represent a significant shift in NMDC's business model. By expanding its operational footprint across multiple mineral categories, the corporation aims to enhance revenue streams and establish itself as a more comprehensive mining enterprise serving India's growing industrial base.
These initiatives underscore the government's push to develop domestic mineral resources and reduce reliance on imports. NMDC's planned investments and capacity additions are expected to support India's infrastructure development and manufacturing ambitions over the coming years.
