No established piranha population detected in Pahang's Klau Dam

PUTRAJAYA — The Department of Fisheries (DOF) said there is currently no evidence of an established piranha population in Klau Dam, Pahang, addressing growing public concerns over the presence of the invasive fish species in Malaysian waterways.

The department's statement came after reports of piranha sightings at the reservoir sparked alarm among residents and environmental observers. Fisheries officials clarified that while individual specimens may occasionally appear in local waters, there is no indication of a self-sustaining population capable of breeding in the reservoir.

The DOF emphasised its commitment to monitoring Klau Dam and other major water bodies throughout the country for invasive fish species. The department urged the public to report any unusual fish sightings and to refrain from releasing aquarium fish into natural waterways, a practice that poses significant risks to native aquatic ecosystems.

Oficials noted that piranha are non-native to Malaysia and thrive in warmer tropical conditions. The department is working with local authorities to implement preventive measures and maintain surveillance protocols to ensure early detection of any invasive species threats to the country's freshwater ecosystems.
