No piranhas caught in Klau Dam mitigation drive, but species may still lurk

Malaysian fisheries officials have concluded a mitigation programme at Klau Dam without capturing any piranha specimens. However, authorities cautioned against interpreting the results as evidence that the invasive species is absent from the reservoir.

No piranhas caught in Klau Dam mitigation drive, but species may still lurk

Fisheries Director-General Adnan Hussain said the absence of catches during the targeted operation should not be construed as confirmation that piranhas are not present in Klau Dam. The cautious assessment reflects the difficulties in detecting and capturing invasive fish species in large water bodies, particularly when populations may be dispersed or concentrated in areas not covered by the mitigation efforts.

The Klau Dam mitigation programme was launched to address concerns over invasive piranha populations that may have established themselves in Malaysian waterways. Such species pose significant ecological risks to native fish stocks and can disrupt aquatic ecosystems if left unchecked.

The absence of catches does not negate previous reports or sightings of piranhas in the reservoir, officials indicated. Adnan emphasised that authorities would continue monitoring efforts and exploring additional strategies to manage any potential invasive species threats at the dam.

The Department of Fisheries said it remains vigilant regarding invasive aquatic species and urged the public to report any unusual fish sightings to relevant authorities. Further assessment and targeted operations may be conducted to determine the actual status of piranha populations in Klau Dam and other Malaysian water bodies.
