Nobel Prize honours scientists behind light-controlled brain technology

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been recognised by the Nobel Committee for their pioneering work in optogenetics, a revolutionary technology that enables precise control of individual neurons using light.

The three scientists developed a method to manipulate brain cells by harnessing proteins derived from algae. These light-sensitive proteins can be inserted into neurons, allowing researchers to activate or deactivate specific cells with pinpoint accuracy using pulses of light. The technique has fundamentally transformed neuroscience research by providing an unprecedented level of control over neural activity.

The discovery emerged from combining molecular biology with physics, drawing on naturally occurring proteins found in algae that respond to light stimulation. By engineering these proteins into nerve cells, the researchers created a tool that has become indispensable in mapping brain circuits and understanding how neural networks function.

Optogenetics has already yielded significant insights into brain mechanisms underlying learning, memory, and various neurological conditions. The technology is expected to pave the way for new therapeutic approaches to treat disorders such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and blindness, making it one of the most promising developments in modern neuroscience.
