Lando Norris delivered a commanding performance in wet conditions to claim pole position for Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix, posting the quickest lap time in a qualifying session that extended more than two-and-a-half hours due to heavy rain and safety concerns.
The McLaren driver finished 0.204 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell, who secured second place on the grid. The extended timeframe of the qualifying session reflected the severity of the weather, with officials repeatedly pausing proceedings as thunderstorms swept across the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.
Norris' pole position marks a significant result for McLaren as the team continues its competitive campaign in the latter stages of the season. The qualifying display demonstrated his ability to manage difficult track conditions and extract maximum performance from his vehicle when it matters most.
The British driver will head into Sunday's race as the favourite to secure a strong result, though the unpredictable weather forecast may yet play a role in determining the day's outcome. Russell's runner-up grid position gives Mercedes a competitive presence at the front of the field for the Grand Prix.
