North Korea cites US military build-up as justification for nuclear expansion

North Korea has attributed its plans to expand its nuclear arsenal to what it characterises as an increasingly aggressive military posture by the United States in the region.

Official statements from Pyongyang contend that deepening defence cooperation between Washington, Seoul and Tokyo represents a shift toward establishing a nuclear-centred alliance in Northeast Asia. The North Korean government has used this characterisation to frame its nuclear development as a necessary defensive measure.

The accusation reflects longstanding tensions over US military presence in the region and trilateral defence arrangements. South Korea and Japan, both US allies, have strengthened security coordination in recent years, citing North Korea's advancing weapons capabilities as a primary concern.

Pyongyang's latest position underscores the escalating cycle of military posturing on the Korean Peninsula, where rival security strategies continue to drive weapons development on both sides.
