North Korea Claims Successful Test of AI-Guided Underwater Weapon

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the successful test of an advanced torpedo system incorporating artificial intelligence technology, marking a significant development in the country's weapons programme. According to the state media outlet, the underwater weapon demonstrated enhanced autonomous targeting and guidance capabilities powered by AI systems.

The test validated propulsion mechanisms that have undergone extensive refinement, with KCNA noting that over 180 developmental tests have been conducted during a five-year period. This iterative testing approach reflects North Korea's sustained investment in modernizing its naval strike capabilities despite international sanctions and diplomatic isolation.

The development underscores ongoing efforts by Pyongyang to enhance its military technological sophistication, particularly in weapons systems capable of evading conventional defense mechanisms. The incorporation of artificial intelligence into torpedo systems represents an evolution in the country's submarine and naval warfare capabilities.

The announcement comes as regional tensions remain elevated, with North Korea continuing to pursue weapons development programmes despite international pressure. South Korea and the United States have expressed concern over Pyongyang's accelerating military modernization efforts throughout recent years.
