North Korea announced it has conducted a test exercise involving an intermediate-range strategic missile, according to state media reports. The drill was aimed at training troops tasked with operating a hypersonic strategic weapon system, the regime said.
The exercise underscores North Korea's continued focus on developing advanced missile capabilities despite international sanctions and diplomatic pressure. Hypersonic weapons, which travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, are considered difficult to detect and intercept by conventional air defence systems.
The timing of the drill reflects heightened military activity on the Korean peninsula, where tensions between North and South remain elevated. The test is likely to draw scrutiny from the United States and regional allies, including South Korea and Japan, which view North Korea's weapons programme as a destabilizing threat to regional security.
Pyongyang has pursued an aggressive pace of weapons testing in recent years as part of its strategy to modernize its military arsenal. The regime has previously claimed success in developing various missile systems, though independent verification of such claims remains limited.
