North Korea considers border loudspeaker broadcasts, weapons deployment

SEOUL — North Korea is considering a resumption of loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along its border with South Korea, according to a statement from Kim Yo Jong released through state news agency KCNA on Monday. The sister of leader Kim Jong Un said the measures were among options being evaluated by Pyongyang, suggesting a potential escalation of tensions on the peninsula. Kim Yo Jong did not specify a timeline for implementation or provide further details about the nature of the tactical weapons under consideration. Loudspeaker broadcasts, which blare propaganda and news from both sides across the demilitarised zone, were halted in 2018 as part of inter-Korean diplomatic overtures but have been threatened multiple times in recent years during periods of heightened tension. The announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about military buildups and provocations along the heavily fortified border, where an estimated 1.9 million troops face each other across one of the world's most militarised frontiers. South Korean authorities have not immediately commented on the statement.
