North Korea considers resuming loudspeaker broadcasts toward South

North Korea's influential state media reported on Wednesday that Kim Yo Jong, a senior official and sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said the country is weighing the resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at South Korea. The announcement comes as cross-border hostilities continue to intensify following Pyongyang's decision to fortify its border with the South beginning in April 2024.

Loudspeaker broadcasts have historically served as a propaganda tool employed by both North and South Korea, though the practice had been largely dormant in recent years. The revival of such broadcasts would represent a significant escalation in psychological warfare between the divided nations.

Tensions have mounted steadily since North Korea began its border fortification programme, which included destroying inter-Korean liaison offices and severing direct communication channels with Seoul. The regime has also conducted multiple weapons tests and withdrawn from previously agreed-upon military agreements aimed at reducing peninsula tensions.

South Korea's government has not yet issued an official response to the latest development. Regional observers have expressed concern that the escalating rhetoric and military posturing could destabilise the wider Asia-Pacific region at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
