North Korea's government has formally inaugurated a new bridge spanning the border between the isolated state and Dandong, a key Chinese trading hub in Liaoning province. The ceremony marks completion of the infrastructure project, which enhances direct transport links between the two neighbours.
The bridge represents significant infrastructure development for North Korea, where cross-border connectivity remains limited due to international sanctions and diplomatic isolation. Dandong, positioned directly across from North Korea on the Yalu River, serves as a crucial gateway for the limited trade and commerce that flows between Pyongyang and Beijing.
The inauguration comes as North Korea continues efforts to develop its transportation networks and maintain economic ties with its principal ally China. Beijing remains North Korea's largest trading partner and key source of aid, despite international restrictions aimed at curbing Pyongyang's nuclear and weapons programmes.
Details regarding the bridge's capacity, construction timeline, and projected traffic volumes were not immediately available. The project reflects ongoing infrastructure cooperation between North Korea and China, particularly concentrated along their shared 1,400-kilometre border.
