Kim Jong Un personally observed the test of the new missile system, which Korean state media said incorporates AI guidance technology to enhance its operational effectiveness. The demonstration underscores North Korea's continued investment in advanced weapons development despite international sanctions and diplomatic isolation.
According to statements attributed to Kim's influential sister, Kim Yo Jong, the artificial intelligence system enables the missile to adjust its flight trajectory at low altitude, a capability the regime claims makes interception significantly more difficult. Such evasive manoeuvres would theoretically complicate air defence responses and reduce reaction time for potential adversaries in the region.
The test comes amid elevated tensions on the Korean peninsula and reflects Pyongyang's stated priority of modernising its nuclear and conventional arsenal. Defence analysts have long tracked North Korea's efforts to incorporate emerging technologies into its weapons systems, though independent verification of the AI capabilities remains limited.
The development is likely to intensify concerns among neighbouring countries and the international community regarding North Korea's weapons proliferation. South Korea and the United States have previously criticised North Korea's missile programmes and called for renewed diplomatic efforts to denuclearise the peninsula.
