North Korea threatens escalation after US accuses it of massive crypto theft

Kim Yo Jong, a key figure in North Korea's propaganda apparatus and close adviser to her brother, made the warning amid escalating tensions between Pyongyang and the United States. Her statement follows American law enforcement claims linking North Korea to one of the largest cryptocurrency heists on record.

The FBI earlier accused North Korean operatives of stealing approximately US$6 billion in digital assets from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. The allegation represents a significant escalation in concerns about North Korea's use of cybercriminal activities to circumvent international sanctions and fund its weapons programmes.

Kim Yo Jong characterised the accusation as part of what she described as ongoing US hostility toward the isolated nation. Her rhetoric reflects Pyongyang's standard pattern of responding to international pressure with defiant statements, though specific details of any threatened response were not immediately outlined.

The incident underscores growing concerns among cybersecurity experts and international authorities about North Korea's sophisticated hacking capabilities. Intelligence agencies have previously linked North Korean actors to major cyber operations, including attacks on Sony Pictures in 2014 and the WannaCry ransomware outbreak of 2017.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula remain high, with North Korea continuing its weapons development programmes and the United States maintaining its military presence in South Korea. The latest exchange marks another chapter in the protracted standoff between Washington and Pyongyang.
