Northeast monsoon arrives in Kerala; state on yellow alert

The northeast monsoon has commenced its onset over Kerala, bringing seasonal weather changes to the region. The India Meteorological Department has placed the state on yellow alert for October 16, signalling residents and authorities to remain prepared for monsoon-related conditions.

Districts in southern Kerala have already begun experiencing the monsoon's influence, with maximum temperatures falling appreciably across Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. The temperature decline is an early indicator of the broader weather system expected to sweep across the state.

The northeast monsoon, which typically lasts from October to November, brings substantial rainfall to Kerala and other parts of South India. Meteorological authorities typically issue colour-coded alerts to inform the public about weather-related risks, with yellow alert indicating the need for heightened awareness.

Authorities have advised residents in coastal and low-lying areas to remain cautious as the monsoon advances. The state disaster management and revenue departments are coordinating preparedness measures as the seasonal weather pattern intensifies across Kerala.
