TACLOBAN CITY, LEYTE — Provincial officials in Northern Samar are stepping up efforts to combat a sharp rise in dengue fever infections that has put the region on high alert. Governor Harris Ongchuan has ordered intensified surveillance measures and expanded mosquito-control operations across municipalities to contain the spread of the virus-borne disease.

The doubling of cases within a year signals an escalating public health concern that requires coordinated action from local government units and health agencies. The province recorded 966 dengue cases in 2026, representing a significant jump from 447 cases during the equivalent period in 2025.

Authorities have mobilized resources for enhanced vector surveillance, focusing on the elimination of mosquito breeding grounds in residential and commercial areas. Public awareness campaigns are being rolled out to educate residents about dengue prevention measures, including proper sanitation practices and the use of protective measures against mosquito bites.

Health officials urged residents to report suspected dengue cases immediately and seek medical attention for symptoms including high fever, severe headache, joint pain, and rashes. The provincial health office continues to monitor the situation closely as efforts intensify to reverse the upward trend in infections.
