Norway's King Harald, Scandinavia's longest-reigning monarch, dies at 89

King Harald V of Norway died on Tuesday, ending a 35-year reign during which he became one of Scandinavia's most enduring monarchs. The Norwegian royal household announced his death without providing specific details about the cause.

Crown Prince Haakon, Harald's only son, immediately assumes the Norwegian throne following the constitutional succession. The 53-year-old, who has served as crown prince since 1991, becomes King Haakon VII. Under Norway's constitutional monarchy system, the succession passes automatically to the heir upon the reigning monarch's death.
