NPC flags risks from Anojan execution and Thileepan statue removal

The National Peace Council has warned that the death sentence imposed on Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anojan in Saudi Arabia and the removal of the Thileepan statue in Jaffna pose risks of deepening community grievances. The body has called on the government and political parties to address both matters with sensitivity.

The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed concern over separate but potentially destabilizing developments, warning that both the capital punishment of Sri Lankan citizen Sivarasa Anojan abroad and the removal of the Thileepan monument in the Northern Province carry risks of crystallizing community-wide resentment.

While distinct in nature and context, the NPC characterised the two events as matters capable of triggering grievances that extend beyond individual cases to affect entire ethnic and religious communities across the country. The organisation underscored the need for measured, inclusive approaches to both situations.

The council has appealed to the government administration as well as all political parties to engage thoughtfully with these issues. The NPC's intervention reflects broader concerns about social cohesion in a country navigating ongoing post-conflict reconciliation challenges.

The Thileepan statue, a significant cultural and historical symbol in Jaffna, has become a focal point of discussion following its removal. Meanwhile, the execution case has drawn attention to questions of citizenship protection and consular assistance for Sri Lankans facing capital punishment abroad.
