The National Police Commission (NPC) is expected to deliberate on a Police Headquarters recommendation to relocate a group of officers credited with a significant drug bust at the Colombo port in recent weeks, according to sources within the commission.

The proposed transfers involve multiple personnel from the narcotics enforcement unit, with a senior Deputy Inspector General among those slated for reassignment. Police Headquarters has formally submitted its recommendation to the NPC for consideration, marking an unusual development following the high-profile seizure of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'Ice', which was reportedly conducted with assistance from United States authorities.

The timing of the transfer proposal has raised questions within law enforcement circles. The officers targeted for relocation were directly involved in coordinating and executing the port operation that resulted in one of the country's major drug interdiction successes in recent times.

The NPC is tasked with reviewing and approving senior police postings and transfers. The commission's examination of the current proposal is expected to determine whether the recommended reassignments proceed as submitted or face modification.
