NPCI chief Asbe appointed to Swift's supervisory board

Asbe's selection to Swift's 15-member supervisory board marks a significant recognition of India's role in shaping global financial messaging standards. As head of NPCI, which operates India's flagship digital payment systems including UPI and RuPay, Asbe brings substantial expertise in modernizing payment infrastructure at scale.

The supervisory board oversees Swift's strategic direction and governance, ensuring the network meets evolving needs of the global financial system. Swift, which facilitates cross-border financial messaging for thousands of banks and institutions worldwide, operates critical infrastructure connecting financial institutions across more than 200 countries and territories.

Asbe's appointment reflects Swift's commitment to strengthening international cooperation and incorporating perspectives from emerging markets. India's digital payments ecosystem, which has processed trillions of rupees in transactions through UPI alone, represents one of the world's largest real-time payment networks by transaction volume.

The inclusion of Indian leadership on Swift's governance body also signals recognition of Asia's expanding role in global financial infrastructure. NPCI, established in 1988, has been instrumental in driving India's transition toward a digital economy and remains a key player in India's financial technology innovation.
