The Matara Magistrate's Court has released the Chairman of the Kirinda Puhulwella Pradeshiya Sabha on bail, along with four other suspects arrested in connection with allegations of unlawful detention and harassment. The five individuals, who include officials of the local government body, were taken into custody by Thihagoda Police following complaints filed against them.
According to reports, the suspects are accused of unlawfully detaining a retired female teacher and her son, and subjecting them to both physical and mental harassment. The case has drawn attention to issues of abuse of authority by local government officials, as the Pradeshiya Sabha is controlled by the National People's Power (NPP).
The release of the accused on bail comes after their judicial remand period concluded. The court's decision to grant bail indicates that proceedings in the matter will continue, with the suspects required to comply with bail conditions set by the magistrate.
The case remains under investigation, with further inquiries ongoing by the Thihagoda Police. The matter highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of citizens by local government authorities and accountability within Pradeshiya Sabha administrations across the country.
