NRI Commission flags surge in visa, recruitment fraud cases
India's Non-Resident Indian Commission has sounded an alert over growing employment and visa-related scams targeting overseas job-seekers. The body has received 268 complaints this year, with authorities urging migrants to verify recruitment agencies before engaging their services.

The Non-Resident Indian Commission has stepped up warnings against fraudulent recruitment agencies and unlicensed legal advisories operating across the country, citing a spike in complaints from job-seekers seeking overseas employment.
According to commission officials, 268 complaints have been filed so far this year, with nearly 75 cases reviewed during recent public hearings, or adalats, held to address grievances from prospective migrants. The surge in complaints reflects an alarming pattern of unscrupulous operators targeting vulnerable individuals desperate for international job opportunities.
The Commission's Chairperson has urged job-seekers to exercise caution when selecting recruitment partners, emphasising the importance of engaging only those agencies officially recognised by the Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) department. Fake agencies and unauthorised legal consultancies continue to defraud applicants through false visa promises, inflated processing fees, and fabricated job placements.
Authorities have advised prospective migrants to verify agency credentials through official channels before committing funds or personal documents. The Commission cautioned that many scams operate by impersonating legitimate firms or providing counterfeit documentation, leaving victims financially devastated and unable to pursue legitimate overseas employment.
