NSDL slides to record low as CDSL surges; divergence puzzles market

NSDL, one of India's two primary securities depositories, hit a new lifetime low on Friday as the stock continued its downward trajectory. The decline extended the company's losses for the fiscal year to 7%, with the scrip now trading 48% below its earlier peak levels, signalling sustained weakness in investor sentiment.

In sharp contrast, CDSL, the competing depository, has demonstrated robust gains of 748% since its initial public offering, underscoring a dramatic divergence between the two market operators. However, CDSL has not been immune to recent volatility, having surrendered 38% from its December 2024 highs amid broader market correction pressures.

Despite recent headwinds, CDSL maintains positive performance for the fiscal year with gains of 13%, substantially outpacing NSDL's downward movement. Market analysts are examining the divergent trajectories, pointing to factors including relative valuations, business momentum, and investor rotation between the two depository stocks.

The performance gap underscores differing investor outlooks on the two entities, which play critical roles in India's securities settlement infrastructure. Industry observers suggest continued monitoring of quarterly results and business metrics for both operators to assess whether the divergence reflects fundamental business differences or temporary market sentiment shifts.
