NSE clears regulatory hurdle for corporate bond index futures launch
India's National Stock Exchange has secured market regulator Sebi's approval to introduce corporate bond index futures, moving closer to launching the new derivative product. The exchange still requires Reserve Bank of India clearance before commencing trading.

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has taken a significant step toward broadening its fixed-income derivatives offerings after obtaining a no-objection certificate from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for corporate bond index futures.
The proposed derivative instrument would allow market participants to hedge exposure to corporate debt movements and facilitate price discovery in India's corporate bond market. Corporate bond index futures are expected to provide investors and financial institutions with an efficient mechanism to manage interest rate and credit risks associated with corporate borrowing.
While Sebi's approval represents a key regulatory milestone, the NSE's plans remain conditional on securing necessary approval from the Reserve Bank of India, which oversees monetary policy and financial stability. The RBI's clearance is a critical requirement before trading in the new derivative contracts can commence.
The introduction of corporate bond index futures would complement existing fixed-income trading instruments and contribute to deeper liquidity in India's debt capital markets. The move reflects efforts by market regulators and exchanges to expand the range of hedging tools available to participants in India's financial system.
The timeline for receiving RBI approval and the subsequent launch date for trading have not yet been announced.
