NSE Steps Up Cybersecurity Push Amid Rising AI-Driven Threats

The National Stock Exchange is conducting a comprehensive review of its network vulnerabilities as threats from AI-enabled cyberattacks gain sophistication, according to NSE Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashish Kumar Chauhan. The move reflects growing concerns within India's financial services sector about evolving cybersecurity challenges that traditional defence systems may struggle to counter.

Chauhan has urged brokers and market participants to elevate cybersecurity from a peripheral function to a core operational priority. The call underscores the need for a coordinated approach across India's securities industry, where interconnected systems and large-scale data repositories make financial infrastructure an attractive target for sophisticated threat actors.

To address these challenges systematically, Chauhan has advocated for establishing an industry task force dedicated to identifying and mitigating emerging cyber risks. Such a collaborative framework would enable market participants to share threat intelligence, harmonise security protocols, and develop best practices tailored to the Indian financial markets ecosystem.

The NSE's proactive stance comes as financial institutions globally grapple with increasingly complex cyberattacks leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. Industry experts warn that traditional cybersecurity measures face mounting pressure from attackers using AI to automate reconnaissance, identify vulnerabilities, and execute sophisticated social engineering campaigns.
