NTPC, India's largest power generator, is intensifying its nuclear energy expansion programme by initiating feasibility studies in new states beyond those already surveyed. The energy company has zeroed in on Uttar Pradesh among other locations as it pursues its ambitious nuclear capacity targets amid the nation's push towards clean energy transition.
The diversification drive reflects NTPC's commitment to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and scale up renewable and nuclear energy generation. The company aims to achieve at least 2 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2032 as an interim target, with a longer-term goal of developing 30 GW of nuclear projects to align with India's objective of reaching 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.
NTPC has already completed preliminary assessments in three states, identifying specific locations suitable for nuclear development. Banka in Bihar, Basai in Madhya Pradesh, and Nabarangpur in Odisha have been shortlisted as potential sites for nuclear projects following these studies. The company plans to leverage its five decades of experience in power generation to establish itself as a key player in India's nuclear sector.
With the groundwork underway in multiple states, NTPC's expansion reflects growing confidence in nuclear energy as a cornerstone of India's energy security strategy. The company's multi-state approach signals preparation for significant capacity additions in the coming years.
