NTPC targets 244 GW capacity with ₹16.86 trillion investment push

NTPC will invest ₹16.86 lakh crore to expand its generating capacity from the current 91 gigawatts to 244 gigawatts by 2037, the company's Chairman Gurdeep Singh announced at its 50th Annual General Meeting on Thursday. The ambitious plan reflects NTPC's strategy to meet India's surging power requirements as economic growth and improving living standards drive energy consumption higher.

The expansion roadmap includes an interim target of 149 gigawatts by 2032, with renewable energy accounting for 60 gigawatts of the total capacity. Singh described the coming decade as a transformational period for India's largest power utility, noting that the composition of the country's power system will undergo rapid evolution to align with energy security and sustainability goals.

The significant capex commitment underscores NTPC's central role in India's energy transition. Singh told shareholders that the company is strengthening its presence across the entire energy value chain, positioning itself to capitalize on opportunities created by changing power sector dynamics and India's commitment to cleaner energy sources.

NTPC's capacity expansion plan represents a substantial increase from earlier projections, reflecting the company's confidence in India's economic trajectory and electricity demand growth. The investment scale demonstrates the infrastructure requirements necessary to support the nation's development priorities over the next 15 years.
