NTPC to add 58 GW capacity, targeting 149 GW by 2032

NTPC Limited will pursue substantial capacity additions across multiple energy sources to reach 149 gigawatts of installed generation capacity by 2032, up from its current 91 GW, Chairman Gurdeep Singh announced Tuesday at the KPMG ENRich 2026 event.

The 58 GW expansion will encompass renewable energy projects alongside conventional power generation, Singh said, signalling the company's commitment to a diversified portfolio. The growth trajectory reflects NTPC's positioning amid India's broader energy transition and rising power demand.

Nuclear energy will constitute an important component of NTPC's medium-term expansion plans. The company has identified approximately 30 GW of nuclear capacity as part of India's broader 250 GW nuclear target by 2037, according to Singh. Feasibility studies have been completed for proposed nuclear projects in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, with additional sites being evaluated across other states.

The expansion underscores NTPC's strategic pivot toward cleaner energy generation while maintaining its role as a cornerstone of India's power infrastructure. The company continues to assess opportunities in emerging technologies and geographic locations to support the nation's energy security objectives.
