PALAYAN CITY — Health authorities in Nueva Ecija have documented seven deaths linked to leptospirosis as the province grapples with an ongoing outbreak, according to medical records compiled through July 11.
The seven fatalities represent a decrease from the 12 deaths recorded during the identical timeframe in 2025. The province has confirmed a total of 103 leptospirosis cases in the current reporting period.
Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted primarily through contact with water contaminated by infected animal urine, typically spreads during heavy rains and flooding. The disease can cause severe illness characterized by fever, muscle pain, and organ damage if left untreated.
Health officials have not released additional details regarding prevention measures or public health interventions currently in place to address the outbreak. The data underscores the persistent threat posed by leptospirosis across rural and urban areas of the province during the wet season.
