NUJP urges government to tackle journalist killings, attacks

MANILA — The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Monday pressed the government to strengthen efforts in prosecuting those responsible for crimes against journalists and to implement protective measures for media professionals.

The appeal was issued as the Philippines joined the international community in observing November 2, designated by the United Nations as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. The annual observance highlights the persistent threats faced by news workers globally and calls for greater accountability in cases of violence against the press.

The NUJP emphasized the need for decisive governmental action to address the culture of impunity that has long shielded perpetrators of attacks on journalists. The union underscored that without meaningful consequences for those who commit crimes against media workers, the cycle of violence would continue unabated.

The call reflects ongoing concerns about the safety of journalists in the Philippines, where media practitioners have faced various threats ranging from physical attacks to legal harassment. Advocacy groups have consistently urged authorities to investigate crimes against journalists thoroughly and bring offenders to justice.
