The National University of Singapore announced on Monday that President Tan Eng Chye will step down at the conclusion of 2027, prompting the university to launch a formal search for his replacement. Tan, who has led Southeast Asia's leading institution since 2018, will have served approximately nine years in the role upon his departure.
A search committee has been established to identify and evaluate potential successors to the presidency. The committee's remit encompasses identifying qualified candidates from within Singapore as well as from universities and institutions abroad, reflecting NUS's position as a global centre of academic excellence.
The timing of the announcement provides the university with a substantial lead period to conduct a thorough and comprehensive search process. The decision to publicize the transition well in advance allows the institution to identify the strongest candidates and ensure a smooth handover of leadership.
Tan's tenure as president has been marked by the university's continued elevation in global rankings and its expansion of research initiatives across various disciplines. His successor will inherit an institution that ranks among Asia's most prestigious universities and faces evolving challenges in higher education and research innovation.
