NYC Students Plant 100,000 Beachgrass Stalks to Fortify Coastal Defences
Nearly 4,000 New York City public school students have participated in a major coastal restoration initiative at Coney Island Creek Park, planting over 100,000 American beachgrass culms to rebuild protective sand dunes and reduce flood risk for nearby communities.

The National Wildlife Federation's Resilient Schools and Communities programme has mobilised thousands of students, teachers and local residents in a coordinated effort to strengthen coastal resilience in one of New York's most vulnerable areas. Since 2022, volunteers have planted more than 100,000 beachgrass culms across 2.25 acres at Coney Island Creek Park, creating a living barrier against storm surge and erosion.
The project addresses critical infrastructure needs for the densely populated waterfront area. By stabilising sand dunes through native vegetation, the initiative aims to provide enhanced flood protection for more than 50,000 residents living in proximity to the park. The beachgrass serves as a natural bulwark, slowing erosion rates and dampening wave action during severe weather events.
The programme represents a growing shift towards community-led environmental management in urban areas. By engaging school students directly in restoration work, the initiative builds ecological literacy while simultaneously tackling the tangible threat of coastal flooding.
