Obscure Canvas Fetches £1.9m After Authentication as Early Turner

A modestly-priced artwork has undergone a dramatic revaluation after experts confirmed it to be an early creation by renowned 18th-19th century painter JMW Turner. The canvas, initially catalogued as a work by a follower of Julius Caesar Ibbetson, was purchased for slightly more than £500 at an auction held in April 2024.

The transformation began when the painting underwent restoration treatment. During this process, conservators uncovered Turner's signature on the canvas, fundamentally altering its attribution and historical significance. The discovery triggered extensive authentication procedures to verify the finding.

The newly authenticated Turner subsequently appeared at Sotheby's auction house in July 2025, where it commanded a final sale price of approximately £1.9 million—a staggering increase of nearly 3,700 times its original purchase price. The sale represented a significant validation of the restoration team's findings and demonstrated the considerable market value placed on verified works by the influential British landscape painter.

The case underscores the importance of professional restoration and conservation work in uncovering hidden details and signatures that might establish or confirm artistic attribution. Such discoveries, while rare, occasionally occur when artworks undergo careful examination and treatment by experienced specialists.
