Occidental Mindoro closes borders to live hog imports over swine fever

Calapan City — The provincial government of Occidental Mindoro has suspended the entry of live hogs intended for slaughter from outside the province, citing an active African swine fever (ASF) case detected in San Jose, Oriental Mindoro. Governor Eduardo Gadiano signed Executive Order No. 63-B on September 11, implementing the immediate moratorium on inter-provincial livestock shipments. The order represents a precautionary measure to contain the spread of the disease, which has caused significant losses across the livestock industry in the Philippines. ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting both domestic and wild swine, with no approved vaccine currently available. Infected animals typically exhibit symptoms including fever, loss of appetite, and lethargy, with mortality rates reaching nearly 100 percent. The provincial government did not announce a specific timeline for lifting the restriction, indicating the ban will remain in effect until ASF threat levels decline in the region. Local hog producers and traders have been notified of the new entry protocols.
