Occidental Mindoro seeks calamity status after monsoon devastation
Provincial authorities in Occidental Mindoro have recommended declaring a state of calamity following severe damage from recent storms amplified by the southwest monsoon. Preliminary assessments indicate losses exceeding P2 billion across infrastructure, agricultural livelihoods, and development projects.

CALAPAN CITY – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Occidental Mindoro has formally recommended that the entire province be placed under a state of calamity following widespread destruction caused by intensified monsoon conditions.
According to initial damage assessments compiled by provincial authorities, the storms have inflicted losses totaling more than P2 billion. The destruction spans multiple sectors, including critical infrastructure, agricultural and fishing livelihoods, and ongoing development projects across the province.
The calamity declaration, once approved by appropriate provincial and national authorities, would enable the region to access emergency relief funds and accelerate rehabilitation efforts. It would also provide flexibility in procurement and deployment of resources for recovery operations.
The southwest monsoon, which typically brings seasonal rains to the region, intensified in recent weeks, triggering flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas. Local officials are continuing to assess the full extent of damages as search and rescue operations continue in affected communities.
