CALAPAN CITY — Local officials in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, are seeking intervention from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to reconstruct and rehabilitate flood management systems damaged by recent weather disturbances.

Municipal Administrator Norman Novio confirmed the request in a statement, citing the urgent need for comprehensive improvements to flood control infrastructure and riverbank reinforcement across the municipality.

According to initial assessments, successive weather systems have inflicted an estimated P1.43 billion in damages to the town's critical infrastructure and communities. The extent of destruction has prompted local government units to escalate appeals for national government support.

The DPWH, which oversees public infrastructure development nationwide, has not yet issued a formal response regarding the allocation of resources for the proposed projects. Officials in Sablayan indicated that the flood control and riverbank rehabilitation work is essential to mitigate future inundation risks in vulnerable areas.

The request underscores the growing infrastructure challenges facing municipalities in the Mindoro region as climate-related weather events increase in frequency and intensity.
