The municipal government of San Jose in Occidental Mindoro has launched a conservation donation campaign targeting the protection of the tamaraw, a wild buffalo species found nowhere else in the world. The "Piso Para sa Tamaraw" initiative was unveiled through the Municipal Tourism, Culture and the Arts Office and the Municipal Environment office.

The tamaraw, scientifically known as Bubalus mindorensis, is endemic to Mindoro and stands as one of the Philippines' most critically endangered mammals. With fewer than 500 individuals estimated to remain in the wild, the species faces ongoing threats from habitat loss, poaching, and competition with domestic livestock.

The donation-based campaign seeks to mobilize community participation and financial resources for tamaraw conservation efforts. By accepting contributions of any amount, the program aims to make wildlife protection accessible to residents across economic backgrounds.

The San Jose municipal government's initiative reflects broader efforts across Mindoro to safeguard the island's unique biodiversity. Conservation groups have long advocated for increased funding and stronger protection measures to prevent the tamaraw's complete extinction.
