CALAPAN CITY — Abra de Ilog has received a formal recommendation to declare a state of calamity following extensive damage caused by the southwest monsoon and associated weather systems that swept through the municipality.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) issued Resolution No. 2026-02 recommending the disaster declaration after assessing the cumulative impact of successive weather disturbances. Preliminary damage estimates place losses at approximately P69.08 million across municipal areas.
A state of calamity declaration would enable the municipality to expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts, access emergency funds, and coordinate resources more effectively with provincial and national disaster management agencies. The recommendation underscores the region's vulnerability to the habagat season, which typically brings heavy rainfall and flooding from June through September.
Local officials are expected to formally consider the MDRRMC recommendation at the municipal level. Such declarations are standard procedure in the Philippines when weather-related disasters cause significant infrastructure damage and affect community welfare.
