Odisha braces for intense depression as heavy rains, gales sweep region

Odisha is battening down for intensifying weather as a depression strengthens over the region, bringing heavy downpours and hazardous wind conditions. Educational institutions across the state have suspended classes as authorities prepare for the severe weather spell.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for dangerous squalls with wind gusts reaching up to 75 kilometres per hour. The strongest impacts are expected along and off the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, with dangerous conditions forecast from the morning of September 23 through the evening of September 24.

The depression's intensification poses risks for coastal areas and low-lying regions. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the weather system moves across the region. Maritime traffic along the affected coasts is expected to face significant disruptions during the forecast period.

The closure of schools reflects official concern about travel safety during the adverse weather window. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to secure loose structures and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement until conditions improve.
