Odisha braces for wettest monsoon season since start of millennium

Odisha's monsoon season is shaping up to be the most abundant in terms of rainfall since 2000, driven by unusually heavy precipitation across the state. As of September 25, official measurements showed the state had accumulated 29 per cent more rainfall than the seasonal average, marking a significant departure from normal meteorological patterns.

The excess moisture and weather systems have translated into sustained downpours across multiple districts, surpassing historical rainfall benchmarks for this period. Meteorological departments tracking the southwest monsoon patterns indicate that conditions favouring above-normal precipitation are likely to continue through October, extending the wet phase further into the post-monsoon transition period.

Such elevated rainfall totals carry implications for agricultural productivity, water resources, and infrastructure management across Odisha. While adequate monsoon moisture benefits crops and replenishes reservoirs, exceptionally high precipitation can also trigger waterlogging and flood-related challenges in vulnerable regions.

Officials are monitoring reservoir levels and river discharge rates as precautionary measures. The state's water resource management agencies have been coordinating with district administrations to prepare contingency plans should precipitation intensity increase further during the season's final weeks.
