Odisha cancels 28.8-acre land allotment to Vedanta over non-utilisation

The Odisha Industrial Development Corporation (IDCO) has cancelled a land allotment of 28.8 acres granted to Vedanta Limited over a decade ago, citing the company's failure to utilise the property. An inspection of the site revealed it remained vacant despite the original allocation in 2013.

The termination marks a significant enforcement action by the state industrial development body against underutilised industrial land. Vedanta had proposed developing the plot for future business expansion and healthcare facilities, but the company did not proceed with the project as originally planned.

The cancellation underscores Odisha's commitment to optimal land utilisation and ensuring allocated industrial plots serve their intended economic development purposes. The state has increasingly focused on reclaiming unutilised land to make it available for productive projects that can generate employment and contribute to regional growth.

Vedanta, one of India's major diversified conglomerates with operations spanning metals, mining, and oil and gas, has substantial investments across multiple states. The company's non-utilisation of the Odisha allocation raises questions about future project commitments in the region.
