Odisha Chief Minister expresses optimism on resolving Mahanadi river dispute

Odisha's Chief Minister has expressed optimism about an imminent resolution to the contentious Mahanadi river waters dispute with neighbouring Chhattisgarh, one of the most significant inter-state water-sharing conflicts in eastern India.

The dispute centres on the distribution of waters from the Mahanadi river, which originates in Chhattisgarh and flows through Odisha before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Odisha has long contended that upstream dam and irrigation projects in Chhattisgarh have significantly reduced water availability for agriculture and industrial use in the downstream state.

The Chief Minister's recent statement reflects ongoing efforts to find a negotiated settlement between the two states, potentially avoiding protracted litigation before the Inter-State River Water Disputes Tribunal. Both states have submitted their cases and evidence to the tribunal, which has been examining the technical and legal dimensions of the water-sharing arrangement.

Resolution of the dispute would have significant implications for irrigation development, hydroelectric power generation, and water security in both states. The outcome is also being closely watched by other Indian states involved in similar inter-state water disputes, as it could set precedent for dispute resolution mechanisms in the country.
