Odisha CM Calls for CEC Resignation Amid Election Panel Discord

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing reported tensions within the Election Commission of India. Patnaik also sought a review of the Systematic Voters' Roll Revision (SIR) exercise, stating that the internal discord at the poll panel had raised serious concerns about its functioning.

According to reports, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi have formally objected to at least 14 decisions and orders issued by Kumar over the past ten months. The disagreements have pointed to significant divergence in approach among the three senior officials responsible for overseeing elections across the country.

The Odisha Chief Minister's intervention highlights growing concerns about the institutional cohesion of the Election Commission at a critical juncture when the poll body is managing electoral processes across multiple states. Patnaik suggested that the reported internal disquiet raises questions about the impartiality and effectiveness of electoral management.

The SIR exercise, which forms the basis for electoral roll updates, has been a focal point of the disagreements between the poll commissioners. Patnaik's call for a revisit to the exercise underscores apprehensions that procedural decisions taken amid internal discord may require reassessment to ensure democratic integrity.
