Major cities and towns across Odisha witnessed significant disruptions on Wednesday as the INDIA bloc alliance enforced a statewide bandh, bringing much of the state's commercial activity to a halt. Shops, business establishments, and petrol pumps remained shuttered throughout the morning, while educational institutions also ceased operations in response to the shutdown call.
Public transportation services were severely impacted, with buses and autorickshaws staying off roads as transport workers participated in the protest. The coordinated action reflected widespread opposition to the government's new mining regulations alongside broader policy grievances raised by the alliance parties.
The shutdown demonstrated the opposition's organisational strength and public support for the protest agenda. While authorities had made limited prior announcements, the scale of compliance indicated significant public sentiment against the contested policies.
Opposition parties have indicated the bandh represents the first phase of their campaign against what they characterise as anti-development mining legislation. The alliance has called for dialogue with the state government and possible legislative review of the contentious provisions.
