The Odisha Housing and Urban Development Department has announced a fresh timeline for receiving appeals against the provisional notification issued for ward delimitation and seat reservation in the state's urban local body elections. The extended window allows citizens and interested parties to submit their objections between October 7 and October 21, 2026, providing nearly three weeks for public feedback on the proposed boundaries and reserved seats.
The state government has scheduled a dedicated period to examine and dispose of all appeals filed during this window. The department will hear and decide on the objections between October 26 and October 28, 2026, ensuring a rapid turnaround for addressing public concerns. This expedited disposal mechanism aims to maintain the election timeline while allowing sufficient opportunity for stakeholder representation.
The delimitation exercise forms a crucial component of the urban local body election process, as it determines the geographical boundaries of wards and identifies seats reserved for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other designated categories. The provisional notification released earlier outlined the proposed ward divisions and seat reservations across urban bodies in Odisha. The appeals process provides residents and civic organizations an opportunity to challenge proposed boundaries or raise concerns regarding the allocation of reserved seats before the final notification is issued.
Once the appeals are disposed of by October 28, the department is expected to finalize the delimitation and reservation details, clearing the path for the state election commission to proceed with the urban local body election schedule. This streamlined approach balances administrative efficiency with democratic participation, ensuring that public grievances are addressed within a defined timeframe.
