Odisha has approved an investment of ₹15,949 crore to strengthen its power transmission infrastructure, marking a significant step to meet anticipated energy demand from the state's rapidly expanding industrial sector. The project will establish the state's first 765-kilovolt transmission network, a critical upgrade from existing infrastructure that relies on lower voltage systems.
The grid expansion comes as Odisha positions itself to attract and retain major capital inflows across multiple sectors. The state is currently the focal point for approximately ₹20 trillion in planned investments spanning steel production, manufacturing hubs, data centres, semiconductor facilities and related industries. State officials view robust power infrastructure as essential to realizing these economic ambitions.
The 765-kV network will significantly enhance transmission capacity and reduce power distribution losses over long distances, making it more efficient to supply electricity across the state's industrial corridors and population centres. The upgrade is expected to provide greater reliability and flexibility to manage peak demand periods as new industrial projects become operational.
Odisha's power sector expansion reflects broader efforts by several Indian states to modernise electricity infrastructure ahead of projected industrial growth. The state's push into semiconductor manufacturing and data centre development in particular is expected to require substantial, consistent power supplies. Officials have indicated that the grid investment is a prerequisite for executing the larger industrial growth strategy.
