Odisha green-lights nuclear plant feasibility studies for NTPC, Adani

The Odisha government has granted approval to NTPC Limited and Adani Power Limited to undertake feasibility studies for establishing nuclear power generation facilities across several potential locations in the state, sources confirmed on Wednesday.
The identified sites for investigation include Deogarh, Balimela and Manjore, according to state authorities. These studies will assess the technical, environmental and economic viability of developing nuclear plants at each location, a preliminary step in the lengthy process of nuclear project development.
The feasibility assessments represent early-stage exploration and do not constitute formal project sanctioning. Both companies will conduct detailed evaluations of factors including geographical suitability, water availability, infrastructure requirements and regulatory compliance before any concrete proposals can advance.
The move reflects Odisha's interest in diversifying its energy portfolio beyond its established thermal and hydroelectric capacity. Odisha, a major power-generating state, has positioned itself as a potential hub for nuclear energy development in eastern India, aligning with national objectives to expand atomic power generation.
Actual plant construction would require clearances from the Atomic Energy Commission and other central regulatory bodies, a process that typically spans several years following completion of feasibility studies.
