Odisha High Court quashes ₹2,169 crore demand against JSW Steel

In a significant verdict, the Odisha High Court has quashed aggregate demands totalling ₹2,169 crore against steel major JSW Steel, providing relief to the company over disputed mineral extraction obligations at its Jajang iron ore mining block.

The court invalidated a ₹696.32 crore demand that had been raised against the company for alleged shortfalls in mineral dispatch from the block. In a related ruling, the bench also set aside a ₹1,473 crore notice issued for the financial year 2024-25, addressing separate compliance concerns.

The rulings represent a substantial reduction in the company's contingent liabilities linked to its mining operations in Odisha. JSW Steel operates significant iron ore mining assets in the state, which serve as crucial feedstock for its integrated steel production facilities.

The judgement comes as Indian steelmakers navigate complex regulatory requirements governing mineral extraction and dispatch commitments with state governments. The Odisha government levies penalties when miners fail to meet contractually stipulated dispatch volumes from their allocated mining blocks.

JSW Steel, one of India's leading private sector steel producers, has substantial mining operations across the country. The company's Odisha assets are critical to maintaining steady raw material supplies for its production units.
