Odisha Police have arrested 113 individuals accused of involvement in violent incidents during a protest by app-based cab and auto-rickshaw drivers in Bhubaneswar, officials confirmed on Thursday. The arrested persons have been forwarded to court, while an additional 60 detainees were released on personal bond after undertaking good behaviour, according to a spokesperson for the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate.
Authorities have registered seven first information reports at Kharvel Nagar police station in connection with the violence. Police have also seized 354 vehicles found to be in violation of traffic norms during the unrest. "Anyone taking law into their own hands will be dealt with strictly as per law," the police officer said.
The cease-work by drivers and riders registered with various online ride-hailing platforms began on August 17 in response to a seven-point charter of demands. The drivers are seeking fare increases, reduction in application fees, improved social security benefits, and other measures to improve their working conditions. The strike has created significant disruption to the transportation sector in the Odisha capital.
