Odisha readies defences as second cyclone looms after Arnab devastation

Odisha is preparing emergency response measures ahead of Cyclone Murasu's expected arrival, with authorities intensifying preparedness operations across the state. The back-to-back cyclones have presented unprecedented challenges to the eastern coastal state's disaster management infrastructure.
Cyclone Arnab made landfall in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on October 28, triggering widespread flooding that devastated communities across Odisha. According to Special Relief Commissioner Rajesh P Patil, the cyclone and subsequent inundation impacted approximately 1.18 lakh people across the state. The disaster claimed six lives and caused significant damage to agricultural land, residential areas, and critical infrastructure.
State authorities have activated emergency response protocols and evacuated residents from vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas ahead of the second cyclonic system. Relief camps have been established and supplies including food, water, and medical aid are being pre-positioned in cyclone-prone districts. The rapid succession of severe weather events has stretched relief resources and personnel across multiple regions simultaneously.
Disaster management officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as the second cyclone approaches. Enhanced monitoring systems are in place, with weather updates being disseminated regularly to keep communities informed of evolving conditions and necessary precautions.
