Odisha rejects early release plea of Dara Singh in Staines murder case

The Odisha State Sentence Review Board has rejected a petition seeking early release of Dara Singh, convicted in the high-profile killing of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two minor sons in Keonjhar district in January 1999. Singh has been incarcerated for over two decades following his conviction for the crime that shocked the nation and drew international attention to communal tensions in the eastern state.

The board's decision to withhold recommendation for premature release was based on apprehensions that such a move could trigger communal disturbances in the region. Members expressed concern that releasing Singh before completion of his full sentence could reignite tensions and pose a threat to public order in Odisha.

The case had remained a landmark instance of communal violence in India. Staines, who worked with leprosy patients through a Christian missionary organization, was killed along with his sons Philip and Timothy in a brutal attack.
